Music worth listening to...

Hello again. Today I was thinking about other ways for me to share my fascination and passion for music and the arts via this foreign medium, the blog. Simple, right? Well...yes. Here's what I came up with: "Tell them what you listen to." Simple.

Where do I start?

Anywhere.

Even if you took all the time in the world to do it, you could go a lifetime before listening to the same piece of music twice.

Today, this is what was playing on my mind:

What a magnificent solo recording debut for cellist Wendy Sutter! This 2008 release also marks another compositional success for Philip Glass. 'Songs and Poems' is a seven movement solo cello work which evokes colours and emotions from Bach's cello suites yet it is clearly 'Glass-ian' with the incorporation of several cyclical, additive and minimal influences. Sutter's deeply lyrical performance resonates with an unwavering sense of direction as she dances on the finger board of her 1620 Stradivarius. This recording will surely be a stepping-stone for an already promising solo career.

This album also includes four excerpts from Glass' 'Tissues Cycle' which was composed as a soundtrack to the film Naqoyqatsi. Percussionist David Cossin and the 70 year-old composer himself, on piano, join themselves to Sutter for these tracks.

Wendy Sutter, cello
Philip Glass, piano
David Cossin, percussion
